What is a Social Security Disability?

A person that has a disability and meets medical criteria may qualify for benefits under Social Security Disability Insurance program. Social Security Disability Insurance program pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial disability or for short-term disability.

"Disability" under Social Security Disability Insurance program is based on your inability to work. We consider you disabled under Social Security rules if:

  • You cannot do perform work that you previously performed;
  • You cannot change to other work because of your medical condition; and
  • Your disability has lasted or will continue for at least twelve months or result in death.
